Getting Started
Recovery is not a singular path. Each individual is unique and has their own specific goals, needs, strengths, culture and background. For that reason recovery looks different for everyone. These resources are intended to help you start your recovery journey. If you are looking for more information or you want to be connected to treatment services, please contact the Problem Gambling Resource Center.
Sometimes it can be challenging to know how and where to get started with changing your gambling. If you are unsure of where you’re at, use this assessment tool to help determine what you might need. There are also ways to put in place barriers to your gambling through NYS Voluntary Self Exclusion or by using an online gambling blocking software.

Please know that none of these resources are a replacement for treatment with a licensed professional.
This self-help workbook for problem gamblers, developed by the UCLA Gambling Studies Program, is a tool for assisting people who are motivated to stop gambling or to reduce the problems associated with gambling. The workbook is currently being evaluated for effectiveness and it is NOT a substitute for professional help.
Personal Financial Strategies for Loved Ones of Problem Gamblers
The handbook will discuss how to repay debts in a way that deters the gambler’s return to betting…while keeping creditors off your back. You will learn about budgeting, bankruptcy, and some immediate actions to take to minimize further financial damage.
A collection of self-change toolkits available to the public, free of charge. Many people change their excessive behavior patterns without entering treatment. These toolkits are for individuals who would like help making a change or want information about their own risky behavior.
Your Money Your Goals: A Financial Empowerment Toolkit
This toolkit gives you the tools and information you need to help people set and achieve goals: build skills in managing money, credit, and debt; and choose financial products that are right for them. Each person has different circumstances and things they can benefit from, AS you can select the tools and best meet their needs and just work with those topics.
